Review LMMS

Linux MultiMedia Studio, better known as LMMS, is a tool that allows us to develop all kinds of musical pieces and has been created to complement the also famous FL Studio. Thanks to this platform, we can generate all types of audio from scratch, with endless tools that will allow us to make the most of our imagination.

As with any good file creation and editing program, this one stands out because it allows us to open several windows simultaneously. It is perfect for working on all the retouching we want to do on top of our productions. This way, you can add all elements to your musical pieces, reproducing them without inconveniences, to run on the fly until you are satisfied with your results.

This possibility of simultaneously opening as many windows as we want has been attractive to us because it produces a customizable experience that most users will find very useful. To give you an idea, if you want to make a simple melody, perhaps one or two open windows might be enough, while if you want to generate a complete base, you can open several and use them all together.

What kind of tools does this application offer us? All the ones you can imagine as far as the generation of musical pieces is concerned. To begin with, we have keyboards with various sounds or effects. Thanks to this enormous amount of possibilities for small sounds, we can generate complete musical pieces, perfect to show the genius we have in us.

Even a feature of this program that we found very interesting is the ability to control many of its functions using a specialized MIDI keyboard, so if you have one or plan to buy one, you can take full advantage of it. If you don't want to control your music productions by hand, a MIDI keyboard will give you a far superior experience.

On the other hand, LMMS also stands out for the possibility of importing files in formats such as OGG or WAV, which are very common these days. Once the system has loaded them, you will be able to make all the modifications you consider necessary. And what formats can we export? Other common ones, such as FLV, VST, or MIDI, although one of its drawbacks is that it does not allow exporting creations in MP3, a real pity.

Besides that, LMMS has a 64-channel FX mixer, which allows you to take your track, load all kinds of instruments you have at your disposal, and add a considerable amount of effects on the desk until you get what you want.

Similarly, we found it interesting that when we have little time, we can start a project as far as we get, and in case we have to leave; we can save it on our computer. We can then send that project through any social platform or email to follow them later on another computer, as long as we have the program installed.

The vast amount of plugins that this program offers to customize the whole experience we can have as users is undoubtedly another of its strengths, so it is possible to set certain functions that do not come initially in LMMS. We recommend you stop to look at several of them that might be useful to you.

How about the program's interface? It delivers without problems. While it is true that it is probably not the most beautiful software we have reviewed, even if we limit ourselves to only those in this segment, we have to say that it is elementary to use the application. In times of very colorful but difficult-to-understand programs in terms of their operation, we believe this platform has little to improve vision.

As the only point against this program, if we had to mention one, we would undoubtedly have to say that it does not allow us to export the audios or tracks that we generate in MP3 format, something that we would have found useful. It is not too complicated to take the musical pieces and convert them with another program, but being able to do it from LMMS would have been ideal.

We also wanted to mention that although this software is translated into other languages, it is only partially translated, so you might find some functions or options still written in English. However, we do not consider this to be a significant problem since most of the tools can be quickly intuited,

To close this review, we can say that LMMS is probably a program we recommend in its class. It is easy to use even for users who have never tried their luck with similar software before, it has a vast amount of tools to customize to the maximum of our musical pieces, and it even allows us to import other tracks to make the modifications we believe necessary.

In our experiences and tests, we have not gone through any forced shutdown or lag. The application's resource consumption is acceptable for the type of tasks it performs, so there are no substantial reasons not to give it a good chance if you like music creation.
