Camtasia Studio is a program for creating and editing videos, used to a large extent for the creation of video-tutorials and video-presentations.
The communication on the Internet is becoming more and more audio-visual, it means that if we want to communicate an idea or concept, in addition to drafting an explanatory text, we have to create a video that accompanies the text. In this way we will reach a greater number of public and in a more direct way. To create this kind of videos, it is convenient to have a software that offer us all the necessary tools for edition and video production.
Camtasia Studio includes all the necessary options to create video tutorials. Thanks to this program we will be able to create a presentation for work, a video-guide to show the operation of a software, etc.
We will be able to include any type of audiovisual material: video, audio, images, etc. Although most notable is the possibility of recording the computer screen.
To complete the recording of the screen, we just have to press on the “Record Screen” button . We have the ability to record full screen or only a region of the screen. In addition, we can also record the sound from the microphone while recording the screen. This is very useful if we want to explain something of what is being recorded on the screen. If we prefer, we can record webcam's video and sound, in this way, in addition to record what happens on the screen, we will record the audio and video of the webcam.
Once we have made the screen recording, we will proceed to edit the recording. This is another remarkable aspect of the program, because we can trim the video, add sound, add video effects, insert subtitles, and more.
The edit window consists of :
Preview: This window shows a preview of the final video. That is, it displays the video with the sound effects, video effects, subtitles, mouse effects, etc. This window is very useful because thanks to it, it will not be necessary to render the video to see the final result.
Tracks and editing: This is the most important window of the program. Here we can add video and audio tracks that will compose the final video. We will be able to cut parts of the video that does not interest us, to manipulate the volume of the audio, or insert an image in form of a watermark.
Window tools: this window shows the different tools of the program such as: library, transitions, etc.
The options that can be displayed in the “Window tools” are the following:
Clip Bin: Here, all items that compose the edited video are displayed: video, audio or image.
Library: Here, shows the different multimedia elements that we can use in our project. These elements can be intros video, predefined images, titles, or sounds. To use any of these items, we only need to drag them to the editing window.
Callouts: Callouts are images that can be added to the video, and highlight any area or important event of the video. We can also add text to make video annotations.
Zoom-n-Pan: With this option we will be able to zoom in on an area of the video to expand the vision of that zone. In this way we will facilitate the visualization of menus or texts that are very small and are important.
Audio: Allows editing audio tracks. We can fade the beginning or end of the audio track, reduce or increase the volume, or completely mute the audio track.
Transitions: Here we can choose the transitions between different video sequences. We will be able to choose from a multitude of them: chess board, rotating cube, dissolution, gradient, page over, spiral, stretching, wheel, zig-zag and more.
Cursor Effects: Here we can choose sound and video effects that we want to apply to the mouse cursor. We will be able to display a red circle each time left mouse button is pressed, or we can add a sound each time the right mouse button is clicked. These visual and sound effects facilitate the viewing of the video, in such a way that the end user will know quickly when and where the mouse was clicked.
Visual Properties: Here we can apply a few simple video effects, such as: image rotation, scale image, opacity, apply borders, etc.
Camera Record: This option allows us to create a video from a webcam. So we can record a video of us talking about something, and add it to the project that we're editing.
Voice Narration: Here we can add comments that we'll be recorded with the PC's mic. This is useful to add an audio description on what is happening on the video.
Captions: Here we can add subtitles to the video and sync with the picture. The addition of subtitles is very simple and we can add them smoothly and quickly.
Quizzing: Allows we can create a surveys on the video. These surveys will be interactive, and users will be able to answer them. For this option to work, we have to save the video in Flash and HTML5 format.
It is worth highlighting the option of “Speech to Text”, that transcribe in text the audio which is narrated in an audio track. So that, we will be able to automatically create video subtitles if we have the audio narration track. To make use of this function, we need to click with the right mouse button on the audio track that contains the narration, and click on “Apply speech-to-text”. It is likely that we need to correct some words, but this option saves a lot of time in the subtitles creation. In addition, the more we use this option, the computer will have fewer errors in the transcription.
At the time of rendering the video, we will be able to do it in a different video and audio formats and save it to hard disk, or we can use the option “Produce and Share”, and upload the video directly to Youtube, Google Drive, or Screencast.com.
When we record the screen we have the possibility of generating a PowerPoint file, which is useful for creating presentations quickly without having to make screenshots.
Camtasia Studio is the most comprehensive software on the market to create video tutorials and video-guides. The program is payment and offers a fully functional 30 days demo.
