WinAce is a software to compress and decompress files.
The compression of files arises with the need to reduce the size of certain documents, so these files can be placed in storage devices, reducing a great amount of size. For example, years ago it was very useful to be able to reduce the size of the file to save to 1.44 Megabytes floppy. Today the compression of files is still very useful and necessary, being able to reduce bandwidth if we are going to upload or download a file from the Internet, or by reducing the space occupied by the backup of our important files.
ACE compression format is uncommon today, being very used at the end of the 90's and the beginning of the first decade of the twenty-first century. In those times the ACE format is noted for his ability to files size reduction, which was better than that of their competitors (rar, zip, etc.).
WinAce was created in 1997 and supports other formats in addition to the .ace. These are some of the formats supported by this compressor/decompressor software: zip, arj, lha, rar, cab, arc, gzip, tar, jar, tgz, tzh, zoo, uue, iso, bz2, xxe, mim, xef.
Today it is not necessary to use this program to unzip .ace files, since there are other programs that support this type of files. However, if we want to create a .ace file, we must use WinAce, as it is the only one who can create .ace files. This is because ACE compression format is proprietary, which means that the developers of this format does not allow other programs to make use of this format.
The last update of this software was in the year 2007, so it is advisable to install any other alternative to WinAce that is more updated and allows the decompression of .ace files.
The software brings us typical options of these programs: browsing the contents of compressed files, integration in the Windows context menu, creation of self-extracting files, send by e-mail generated files, etc.
The software is paid and allows a 30-day trial.
