Marathon is a classic first-person shooter video game in which we must save the space station from alien attacks.

This game was developed in 1994; therefore, its visual style and sound belong to that time, recalling the legendary Doom, Wolfstein 3D, or Duke Nukem 3D. In the beginning, the game was developed only for Mac operating systems. Thanks to this game being based on the open-source graphic engine Aleph One, we can enjoy this FPS (First Person Shooter) on Windows, Linux, and Mac.

The game's story takes place in the space station Marathon, invaded by a group of aliens who aim to gain control of the station. 3 Artificial Intelligence systems control the space station:

• Tycho: that is in charge of the communications of the station, and the alien attack has destroyed that.
• Durandal: controls the automated systems such as doors, stairs, airflow, etc. Has been severely damaged by the alien attack.
• Leela: is in charge of the defense system. The alien attack has severely damaged it.

Our mission is to destroy the alien invaders and to repair and restore the space station defense system. To do this, we need to install the boards that have created Leela, which will be used to restart the defense system. In addition to eliminating the aliens, we must deal with Durandal, who has lost control and has strange behavior due to the damage suffered.

Marathon is the first game of the trilogy, and at the time, it was considered one of the most important sagas of FPS since it included news that until then had not been seen., for example, the physics engine used.

The management of the game is typical of games in this style. Remember that to interact with the objects (terminals, doors, etc.); we must use the TAB key. We can access a map of the area by pressing the M key. Even so, we will be able to configure the keys in the game's start menu.

The game allows us to play online games, though the servers tend to be empty. If we want to play online, we must call a friend to join us.

We can record a replay and save it to play another time. Even at the time, the game's developers (Bungie) created a competition in which you could send a replay of the gameplay.

Today, the visual style and sound of the game can't be compared with the actual FPS, and many users do not find it attractive. However, the story that proposes the video game can be a great factor in beginning the adventure, especially if we are fans of science fiction literature.
